ITANAGAR, Jun 21:Along with rest of the country, the 4th International Day of Yoga was celebrated across the state today with much enthusiasm across all sections of society.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu took part in the celebrations here at the headquarters of 1st battalion of Arunachal Pradesh Police at Chimpu. The event was also participated by ministers, parliamentary secretaries and other officials.

The state police department organized the event with over 300 participants comprising of police officers, personnel and their family members participating in the yoga practice session following the common yoga protocol. 

The department has also been organizing the month long wellness programme across the 23 districts for the police personnel and their family members culminating in today’s programme.

The Chief Minister in his speech commended the state police for organizing the month long activities of wellness month through yoga for wellbeing of police officers and families. 

“Along with physical fitness activities, we must also keep our mind under control and healthy. Our mental health is important to wean away emotional weaknesses.” 

He said “Yoga not only keeps us physically fit but also keeps the mind calm, present and mindful. By being mentally and physically fit, we can overcome any negative emotions and have better decision making capability.”

The Chief Minister stressed on government officials, police personnel and politicians to practice yoga to fight stress developed due to hectic life.

He said by maintaining overall psychological well-being, we can raise our capability to work and make ourselves more productive.

The Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking the yoga to the United Nations and through it making it as a world event. He said more than 170 countries at the UN had supported the motion for celebration of International Day of Yoga.

He also said the date of Yoga Day is special because it is the longest day of the year across the northern hemisphere and shortest in southern hemisphere.

The Chief Minister on the occasion released a souvenir ‘Wellness First’ published by the police department.

Home Minister Kumar Waii, Chief Secretary Satya Gopal and DGP SBK Singh also spoke on the occasion.

The Chief Minister also carried out plantation drive in the battalion compound.

Governor BD Mishra participated in the IDY event at Rajiv Gandhi University along with Raj Bhavan officials and faculty members, students, research scholars and school children.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that many important medico-academic assets of Indian cultural heritage had been suppressed out of practice during the long foreign rules and credited PM Modi for the United Nations recognizing Yoga in the international forum.

The Governor, who has been practicing Yoga for forty years, shared his experiences and importance of the ‘phisio-mental’ wellbeing legacy of Yoga. He also explained the important procedural aspects of Yoga practice.

The Governor, who hails from the Black Commando Organization said that all top commandoes practice Yoga and Pranayam for concentration, tension free mind and raising will power.  He appealed to the people to inculcate Yoga as part of their lifestyle. It is good and beneficial to all, he further said.

The Governor appreciated the University fraternity for involving and integrating its members in observing the occasion in befitting manner. He was impressed by the students of Physical Education Department, who conducted the Common Yoga Protocol and presented a group display of ‘Yoga Pranayam’ and internal cleansing.

Prof. Tamo Mibang, Vice Chancellor, RGU, Dr. Tomo Riba, Registrar, Deans and Heads of Department were present on the occasion. Dr. Anil Mili, Head of Department, Physical Education, RGU along with his Post Graduate students (Yoga) participated in the Common Yoga Protocol.

Meawhile, the First Lady of the State Neelam Misra participated in the Yoga day celebration at Raj Bhavan. The programme was an all women initiative for making Yoga practice popular among the women, particularly the girl child of the State.

Women from all walks of life, including officers and officials, Brahmakumaris and girls students from Vivekanada Kendriya Vidhyalaya, Chimpu joined the First Lady in ‘All ladies’ Yoga programme.

Team from Art of Living, Jullang led by Tadar Taine conducted the Common Yoga Protocol.  

The participants further interacted over a high tea on ways and means to make Yoga popular amongst the people.
