ITANAGAR, Jul 11: World Population Day was observed today in various parts of the state with seriousness to spread awareness about the ill-effects of excessive population growth and related issues.
State Health Society observed the day in a befitting manner at Kendriya Vidyalaya No.1 Naharlagun where Minister Health and Family Welfare, Alo Libang highlighted the reasons and significance of the day. Director, Family Welfare Dr. A .Yirang informed that to control the rapidly growing population there is need for awareness campaigns on education and medical methods like use of contraceptive tablet, surgeries etc. to maintain a small and happy family. Earlier Dr. Runi Tasung explained briefing on a comic book named Arun-Aachal on adolescent health which has been written under the initiative and guidance of former Secretary Health and Family Welfare Dr. Kinni Singh which was released by the Minister on the occasion.
The other highlights of the programme were video show on family planning, skit performance on small family and happy family and a motor bicycle rally flagged off by Libang at Kendriya Vidyalaya School entrance gate under National Vector Borne Control Programme. Joint Director Family Welfare Dr. S. Bhattacharji was also present.
In Papum Pare the District Health Society observed World Population Day at Health & Wellness Centre, Yupia. The programme was inaugurated by ADC (HQ) Tabang Bodung with simultaneous launch of the Population Stabilization Fortnight in presence of Dr. DMO Subu Tasso Kampu, DRCHO-cum-CEO, DSO, DANO, MO I/C HWC, DPMU, staffs, ASHAs and general public.
ADC highlighted the effects of population burden over the socio-economic status of people and state as a whole and advised all to create awareness on control of population growth through various family planning methods provided by health facilities of the district. DMO requested all the staff, especially the frontline health workers like ANM/ASHAs/AWWs to disseminate information in community level and spread awareness on adopting family planning methods like temporary and permanent sterilization as per individual convenience. She also informed that OCP, condoms, ECP are available in all health facility and injection ANTRA is available in some health facilities where trained doctors are available.
Meanwhile, World Population Stabilization Fortnight was launched today at District Hospital, Yingkiong by Deputy Commissioner, Karma Leki who urged all those present to adopt “Ham Do Hamare Do” and discourage polygamy for a happy family life. DC also requested the parents present not to allow their daughters to marry before the marriageable age of 21 years and asked all ASHAs and Anganwadi Workers to disseminate knowledge about various contraceptives being provided by the health department to all beneficiaries of the villages.
Earlier, to mark the occasion a road rally from District Hospital to Lower Market & back was organized where hundreds of Anganwadi Workers/Helpers, ABK Women Welfare Society members, students and Health Officers lead by District Programme Manager, NHM Upper Siang District participated.
