TEZU, Oct 11: World Mental Health Day was observed with the theme focusing on ‘Suicide Prevention’ through a mass procession from Zonal Hospital here on October 10 last.
Assistant Commissioner Sunny Singh flagged off the rally where the slogans were “Suicide is not a solution”, “Stop suicide”, “Stop taking opium/drugs”. He advised the students to set a clear goal and strive hard to achieve it and stop harping on negative aspects that cause mental ailments. DMO Dr S Chai Pul shared that every 40 second, someone loses his/her life through suicide due to mental depression and other related illness, along with addiction related issues. “But suicide is not the solution and to shed a positive light to mental health, one must have courage and discuss the problems with parents, friends and relatives to ease them out,” he added. DPO Dr S Towang, Eye Surgeon Dr C Tayang & MS, Dr A Kri, paramedics and students participated in the programme.
World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 every year to raise awareness on the scale of suicides around the world and the role that each stakeholder can play to prevent them.
Rajiv Gandhi University’s Psychology department and NSS Cell jointly observed World Mental Health Day with this year’s theme ‘Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention’.
Various awareness activities were conducted by the MA Psychology students on Thursday in Doimukh and RGU campus.The day-long event comprised of poster presentations on various mental health issues, flash mob and street plays on suicide prevention and open discussions with the audience to promote mental health. The event targeted various groups of people ranging from school and university students of Doimukh Higher Secondary School and RGU campus and the general public at Doimukh market and taxi stand. Further, the team also interacted and performed awareness acts for the workers residing at the university premises. They also made the audience aware of the various resources for help centres available in the state such as Midpu Mental Health Centre, TRIHMS and Department of Psychology, RGU.
The head in-charge of the department noted that suicide is a common phenomenon in state and highlighted the importance of not stigmatizing mental health issues. She also asserted the loss of societal resources through youth suicides and encouraged people to realize that reaching out for help is the right option and not ending their lives. RGU PR
