ITANAGAR, Jun 5: Along with rest of the world and country, World Environment Day was observed today all across the state enthusiastically with the aim of encouraging awareness and action for saving environment from degradation.
Governor of the state Brig. (Dr.) B.D. Mishra (Retd.) and First Lady Neelam Misra participated in a Rudraksha (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) saplings plantation programme here at Raj Bhavan. Speaking on the occasion, the Governor called upon the people to plant more saplings to preserve, protect and promote environment for the wellbeing of the present and future generations. Commissioner to Governor R.P. Upadhyaya IPS, along with officers and ITBP troops stationed at Raj Bhavan were present on the occasion.
Department of Environment & Forests observed the day in a befitting manner here in capital with a rally from PCCF Office to IG Park flagged off by PCCF & Prnl. Secretary (E&F) Lalram Thanga IFS. It was participated by 200 school students from VKV, Chimpu, Guardian Angel School & Gyan Ganga Vidyapith School of Itanagar, Abu Gellam School, Chandranagar and Royal International School, Naharlagun.
Certificates and prizes of a painting and drawing competition on this year’s theme ‘Air Pollution’ that was organised by the department were distributed among the winners in both senior and junior categories. The department also conducted a mass tree plantation programme participated by students, teachers and officers in IG Park field premises where 300 free tree saplings were distributed to the students for plantation in their schools and home premises. The event was coordinated by Deputy Director (Env. & CC) Dohu Robin with his team members from ENVIS and Climate Change Cell. All officers and field staff of PCCF Office actively participated in the programme.
Staff and officers of Regional Outreach Bureau M/o Information & Broadcasting observed World Environment Day today at its office-cum-residential complex here at Senki View. In response to the people’s campaign ‘Selfie with Sapling’ launched by Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar urging all to join and plant a sapling and post the selfie with the sapling on social media, Director of Arunachal Pradesh Region Dr.Keshavmurthy led the campaign by planting more than 100 saplings of various types of plants in the campus, emphasizing on ‘Jan Bhagidari’ which is integral towards tackling the environmental issues and environment protection. Commenting on this year’s theme ‘Air Pollution’ he said that transport, industries and agriculture are the main causes of air pollution leading to the biggest environmental health risk of the time.
Indira Gandhi Government College, Tezu celebrated WED with a cleanliness drive around the premises followed by a mass plantation drive in which large number of saplings were planted inside the campus, actively participated by the faculty members, non-teaching staff and students. Principal Dr. Kangki Megu reminded the participants that protection of the environment should be everyone’s concern, otherwise a day will come when people have to purchase air just like drinking water.
