Tawang, Sep 24:   A three-day awareness and sensitization workshop on 'Health and Nutrition for Rural Tribal Women' was conducted here at the Zomkhang Hall by Arunachal Pradesh State Council for Science & Technology (APSCS&T), Department of Science & Technology, GoAP   supported by National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), DST, GoI   on   September 10-12 last.  
Joint Director, APSCS&T Dr. Debajit Mahanta while   emphasising   on the   importance of women’s health as an essential factor for happy living and healthy family, said that the workshop is a small step towards educating women about their health and bringing change for the better. Scientific Officer, APSCS&T, Yumbi Bijum Yongam   highlighted the importance of mental health which is often neglected, adding that due to lack of awareness, people often attribute such symptoms to various superstitious beliefs instead of having medical help through psychiatrist counselling. She further stated that mental health is as important as physical health and to bring in the change there is a need to stop stigmatizing people with mental health issues. Chief Guest and   District Medical Officer, Tawang Dr. Wangdi Lama while   elaborating on the importance of the first step to healthy living i.e. hand washing, stated that about 60% of health problems can be controlled by just incorporating this habit in daily life. Stating that women are more prone to mental health problems than men, he opined that their health should also be a focal point in health sector.
Resource Person   and gynaecologist at   District Hospital Dr. Tenzin Kunga emphasized on Breast Self-Examination (BSE) and stated that it is the most cost effective way to detect early signs of breast cancer. He also demonstrated various ways of BSE that women can practice at home. CDPO, Tawang Dhondup Pema emphasized on the importance of all-round nourishment among women and children, self and environmental hygiene for healthy living and briefed about various governmental schemes related to nutrition for pregnant women, lactating mothers, adolescent girls and children.
More than fifty participants from both rural and urban areas including school, college students and NGOs participated in the workshop.
