NAMSAI, Jan 30: Two women from Bangalore embarked on a 3800km cycling expedition from the easternmost part of the country-- Kibithu in Arunachal Pradesh to Koteshwar in Gujarat travelling traversing seven states.
Meera Velankar and Tasneem Mohsin both long distance endurance riders started their journey on January 27 last with an aim to raise awareness on cycling, environment & fitness in Covid times. The expedition was flagged off with the help of Indian Army officials and state government officials.
"Starting the expedition from Arunachal with its beautiful mountains, hills & streams is really amazing," said Meera Velankar. People here are very good and welcoming, we haven’t faced any difficulties during the expedition in Arunachal, she said while on their way to Tinsukia, Assam . "We are overwhelmed by the hospitality & support by the government officials of Arunachal Pradesh," both women said.
"This state welcomes women; people of Arunachal are highly respectful to women, we felt very safe," Tasneem said smilingly
"Our aim is to cycle almost 175 - 200 Km per day, the rains & high altitude brings it own unique level of difficulty & makes it extremely challenging with cold head winds," added Tasneem.
Meera Velankar (45) from Bangalore is a seasoned long-distance endurance rider and holds a Ph.D in Life Sciences. Meera is a mother of two girls who are athletes and state champions. Meera has been cycling for the past 10 years and is amongst the top long distance ultra women cyclist in India. She is a world record holder- WUCA (World Ultra Cycling Association) Kanyakumari to Kashmir (K2K)- 3850 kms in approximately 19 days in 2020 and Golden Quadrilateral 6263 kms in 41 days in 2021 on a tandem cycle.
Tasneem Mohsin (42) is an endurance rider, who has earned Super Randonneur two times, by completing 200km, 300km, 400km & 600km in a single year, twice. She is an Architect-Interior Designer by profession. Mother of two kids, Tasneem had successfully finished 1200km Les Randonneur Mondiaux.
