Dambuk, Nov 19: For any traveller stepping into Dambuk in winter, orange gardens along NH-13 on the hilltops will be a treat for eyes as well as taste buds.
Known as the ‘Orange Bowl of Arunachal’, Dambuk is located on the mesmerizing hillock deep inside Eastern Arunachal and has earned the reputation for producing one of the best qualities of oranges in the country. For having a taste of this extraordinary flavour, a visit to the local vendors along the roadsides is a must for any traveller. One such roadside vendor named Kare Ratan revealed she is pursuing her final year BA(Economics) from Shillong. When asked the reason for taking the profession, Kare revealed that it was necessary to extend helping hands to her parents during the vacation. “Since the COVID lockdown, I have been engaged in the orange orchard to get bumper harvest and every morning along with my parents, I climb the hills for maintaining the garden. We sell one orange at a price of Rs 10 and the daily half-day turnover touches Rs 3000,” she detailed.
Another vendor said she earns Rs 7000 to 8000 per day. “Most of the oranges are exported and from the two acres of garden, I possess there are good returns during the season,” she informed.
The Khasi-Mandarin species of orange which is predominantly grown here is of export quality. It can be recalled that Dambuk oranges went global in 2018 with the first consignment shipped to Dubai. The Orange Festival of Adventure and Music (OFAM) every winter has also been a great attraction for music junkies since 2014.
