Tale, Mar 3: Wildlife Conservation Society-India in collaboration with Hapoli Forest Division, Department of Forests, Environment and Climate Change conducted a training on ‘Wildlife Crime Prevention, Detection and Investigation’from March 2-4 at Tale Wildlife Sanctuary.
The training was attended by 21 staff members including forest guards and forest protection squad members of the Tale Wildlife Sanctuary.
The training programme, led by Uttara Mendiratta, Program Head, Counter Wildlife Trafficking, was inaugurated by Abhinav Kumar, IFS, Divisional Forest Officer, Hapoli Forest Division on 2nd March.
ShaleenaPhinya,Coordinator,Singchung Bugun Village Community Reserve, shared the experience of her tribe to protect the Bugun Liocichla bird in tandem with the Forest Department.
The legal training  covered  topics such as ‘Offences under WildLife (protection) Act, 1972’, ‘Search and Seizure Protocol’, ‘Threats to Lesser Known Species’ and ‘Legal Documentation.’ The staff also participated in a crime simulation exercise where they also drafted documents such as seizure lists and other legal documents.
New concepts such as ‘Situational Crime Prevention’ were also introduced to the participants to highlight the importance of exploring interventions that also facilitate community engagement.

Wildlife Conservation Society-India’s Counter Wildlife Trafficking (CWT) programme aims to support government agencies by building and improving their access to information,skills, technology, and expert support to tackle wildlife crime in India.
