BOMDILA, Jul 25: In a bid to afforest and beautify West Kameng district beginning from the district headquarters here under the Clean-Green Arunachal mission, Deputy Commissioner Karma Leki on Saturday spearheaded a cleaning and plantation drive covering 0.75 hectares of sinking zone between Lower Gompa and Power House.
A total of 500 saplings of Illicium Griffithii provided by the Department of Forest & Environment were planted in the said stretch to contain landslides and secure the area as there are a few habitations on the leeward side. DC said that plantation in the area has been necessitated on account of its vulnerability. Guru Tulku Rinpoche, Abbot of Lower Gompa while taking part in the plantation drive proposed construction of Manes and a Chorten in the area for beautification and conservation, which he opined if properly planned and executed, could emerge as a place of tourist attraction. “Though a number of plantation drives have been carried out in the district so far, many more are in the pipeline,” DFO C Loma said, adding that it will be the district’s endeavour to be the torch bearers of the Clean-Green Arunachal mission. RFO TD Megaji assured to take up fencing works in the area for better upkeep and deter illegal encroachments.
