DOIMUKH, Jun 2: As a run-up to the World Environment Day scheduled on June 5, ‘Fridays for Future Arunachal Pradesh’ today organized a national webinar titled ‘Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Resource Management.’
Phd research scholar at Rajiv Gandhi University’s Sociology Department Bengia Pappi as Resource Person while throwing light on TEK said it is a tradition-based knowledge bank of a community or people based on experiences that has remained within the community for generations with gradual modification due to influence of local culture and environment. TEK helps in understanding of communities and their needs at grassroots level, serves as a basis for their self-sufficiency and self-determination and contributes in development and better policy making, she said. It also helps in dealing with Climate Change in an effective manner, protects people and their culture, manage environment risks and help the tribal indigenous communities to protect their IPRs (Intellectual Property Rights), she added.
“Some common challenges faced today by Arunachal’s tribal society in terms of TEK are due to the declining social legitimacy (including government support), lack of recognition of practices, practitioners and self esteem, erosion of knowledge, lack of successors and right to resources, traditional lands, etc,” the RGU research scholar opined. If TEK diminution is a crisis, it can be solved by an appropriate integration with formal learning, constant engagement on its contemporary relevance and promotion as active social traditions in vital areas like agriculture, health etc., she underscored, adding that issues relating to integration of TEK need to be addressed at different social levels such as communities, civil society groups, NGOs, formal and informal education institutions, local administration etc.
More than 100 participants from across the country attended the webinar. FFF-AP Coordinator Prem Taba was the moderator.
