ITANAGAR, Jul 3: Wednesday turned out to be a harrowing day for most of the shopkeepers in the Capital Complex who had to bear the brunt of overflow from waterlogged roads amid heavy downpour with a defunct drainage network adding to the woes.
The pedestrian movements also looked extremely difficult as most of the people rolled up their trousers to wade through the mud swamp brought by rainwater to the market area. More than a dozen of shops and their merchandise at Akashdeep and Ganga Market near BSNL main office have been badly affected. The NH-415, opposite Civil Secretariat also remained waterlogged with no signs of respite during morning hours.
Among the badly affected public facilities include Bank of Maharashtra where rainwater created hurdles in carrying daily banking chores.
Besides the main roads, many residential colonies such as E and D Sectors and low lying areas of Vivek Vihar remained affected as rains continued to pound. “Many shops have been affected by incessant rains and merchandise worth lakhs have suffered damage,” a few shopkeepers at Ganga Market area told this daily. Seeping of water inside shops reflects the government apathy towards improving the city drainage, they said. “Such scenario has become a routine affair during rainy season and could be more devastating for business if not addressed timely,” they added. The shopkeepers also unanimously opined that due to waterlogging, markets in the city had witnessed a dip of around 40% in sales and the scenario was same at Akashdeep commercial hub on Tuesday also. It was also alleged that despite the areas remaining waterlogged for the past few days, administration hasn’t come to the rescue. Another shopper said that even countryside people during primitive times had better civic facilities than the inhabitants of this ignored city.
State government should initiate substantial action towards revamping the drainage network and most importantly complete the National Highway-415 from Itanagar to Banderdawa which is lying in a deplorable condition, those affected demanded.
