PASIGHAT, Jun 16: Seram villagers have once again embarked on a mission of voluntary flood protection to divert the river current of the mighty Siang river which is continuously eroding away more lands of the village and adjoining others situated on left bank side under Lower Mebo by erecting porcupine spars, a traditional method of fighting floods.
While talking about their efforts, Seram Village Head Gaon Burah, Josung Modi said that, devoid of any government assistance till date in stopping or minimizing massive erosions of these villages, the villagers are volunteering to protect their own villages. “Since long we have been suffering from massive destruction by Siang river but no serious efforts have been made by state or central government,” added Modi who is also doubtful about the release of Rs. 35 crores assured by Chief Minister Pema Khandu in regards to flood protection works mostly under Lower Mebo covering villages like Sigar, Raling, Motum, Borguli, Seram, Kongkul, Gadum and Mer.
Seram Village Secretary, Amit Modi also appealed the state government to speed up the release of Rs. 35 crores meant for flood protection works. He also recalled how erosion had led to the wiping out of the entire old Seram village known as ‘Ramku’ a couple of years ago leading to shifting of villagers to newer location called Palek. The flood protection works are continuing since last 3-4 days and likely to continue for more days, informed Anthony Gamnoh, one of the active youth from the village.
Similar flood protection work  has also been undertaken recently in Namsing, a neighboring village.
