PASIGHAT, Jul 20: The Pasighat Vendors’ Association (PVA) has appealed to the state government to compensate the poor vendors of the Pasighat main market who suffered losses arising out of damages caused to their sheds and articles due to the forcible eviction drive conducted on July 5 last.
Backed by the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), All Arunachal Pradesh Workers’ Union (AAPWU) and other bodies, the PVA has alleged that the District Administration had carried out the eviction drive issuing just a short notice which is illegal as per the Arunachal Pradesh Vendors (Protection & Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vendors) Act 2018. The PVA also alleged that the East Siang DA has evicted the vendors from the PMC market without arranging a suitable alternative place which has resulted in a complete halt of their businesses.
BMS President Mipet Tayeng and AAPWU East Siang Unit Secretary (Private Sector) Mondil Moyong have also alleged that the DA has hurt the sentiments of the local vendors and associations as the DC has acted on an unfounded allegation
which claimed that the non-local vendors are not allowed to carry out business in the market. Both Tayeng and Moyong while clarifying that no biased treatment is meted out to the non-tribal vendors, have also claimed that they possess the audio recording of the DC’s statement as proof. The BMS and AAPWU have appealed to the DC to find a more suitable vegetable market for the vendors as the Siang Sabji Mandi and other notified places are not equipped with necessary facilities.
The above office bearers of the BMS and AAPWU East Siang Unit have further alleged that the DA has not involved the representatives from the street vendors while forming the Town Vending Committee which is a violation of the Act. “We will resort to democratic movement to fulfil our demands and protect the rights of the street vendors and other unorganized sector workers if the DA continues to neglect our genuine appeal,” Moyong added, while demanding a compensation of Rs 16000 each for all the 199 affected vendors.
The DC, however, has refuted all the allegations and has countered them by reasoning that the drive was necessitated as the vendors had failed to vacate the place and shift their businesses to the DA-notified locations.
