PASIGHAT, Mar 13: Impressed with the initiative of the state government to launch an ‘Airgun Surrender Abhiyan’ from April next in order to stop the rampant killings of birds, Pasighat based All Bogong Students’ Union (ABSU) has extended its full support to the effort.
An ABSU team called on Minister, Environment & Forest Mama Natung on Thursday at his Itanagar residence and handed over an appreciation letter in admiration of the surrender drive. Due to rampant killing and hunting of birds and wildlife many rare species of birds and animals have already gone extinct and some are on the verge of extinction, the union observed, reiterating the need for their protection and conservation. “We are ready to cooperate with  the government in this regard and for this we have also urged the Minister to officially direct the Deputy Commissioner, East Siang to implement the Airgun Surrender Abhiyan in letter and spirit in the district,” General Secretary, ABSU Siang Moyong said.
Meanwhile, Divisional Forest Officer, Pasighat Forest Division Tashi Mize has already issued an order for surrendering of airguns in the district and his department is gearing up for successful implementation of the surrender initiative. The people of Runne village near Pasighat have already surrendered their airguns and more are likely to follow, Mize added.
Divisional Forest Officer, D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary Tasang Taga is also gearing up for the drive in  the areas under his jurisdiction.
