ITANAGAR, Oct 23: Adi Students’ Union (AdiSU) has expressed its resentment over the delay on the arrest of culprits involved in the arson of Community Hall and 14 houses in new Mabra village in Namsai district on October 12 last.
Speaking to reporters at Press Club today, President AdiSU, Nang Gao said that despite their repeated pleas and also FIR being lodged, the administration as well as police are reluctant to arrest the culprits. The accused have already been identified and roaming freely, whereas the victims are living in total chaos without food, shelter and clothes, lamented AdiSU President. The lackadaisical attitude shown by the administration and police are not acceptable, so we are organizing peace rally on October 25 next at Namsai to press our demands like immediate arrest of the culprits, release of compensation to the villagers and re-construction of Community Hall (Musup) which is one of the prestigious and respected centers of Adi Community, said Gao. “We are not against any community but all the accused who set fire to the Community Hall and left 14 houses including 130 members homeless, must be arrested and punished as per the laid down laws,” he added.
Speaker, AdiSU, Kalen Tadeng asserted that police were reluctant to lodge the FIR but after much pressure from the union they had to lodge it. When asked about the re-settlement of the village in Reserve Forest Area, he informed that villagers are mainly from three villages of Mabira, Morapat and Mazgaon under Chowkham circle of Lohit District and had lost all their lands and properties in the devastating floods of 2004 and since then the government and even the village chief of Chowkham has given his consent to settle in the new area.
Though flood-affected villagers are settled in the forest area, it is not right to commit arson and take law in their own hands, Tadeng stated.
