ITANAGAR, Apr 16: A two-day training on ‘Women Safety and Security,’ sponsored by Vishwa Yuvak Kendra (VYK) and organized by National Youth Project (NYP) commenced today here at Dera Natung Government College.
The training programme is being attended by over 100 participants, mostly young girls of DNGC, Oju Welfare Association and self-help group members.
Speaking as chief guest, DGP SB K Singh said that the topic is highly relevant for Arunachal Pradesh, since the traditional and cultural life style is fast adopting a modern approach. The DGP cautioned the young girls never to accept digital friendship without knowing the person personally and be particular while choosing passwords to prevent hacking. Before applying for jobs or attending interviews, proper verification should also be carried out, he remarked.
The DGP informed that 1,10,000 cases are pending in various police stations across the state, for which woman police officers are being used as investigating officers besides training for NGO representatives. To ensure security of people, he pointed out his initiative of developing Arunachal Surakshya, a mobile App to ensure security for every Arunachalee. The police department also offers self-defence training and plans to conduct awareness programme in all educational institutions, he said.
DNGC Principal Dr N T Rikam, as guest of honour while regretting about the rising eve teasing and rape cases said that this kind of training will be very helpful to the participants. Terming the event very important, DNGC Assistant Professor Tombom Riba said that personal safety of women, particularly young girls poses serious challenges.  
Deputy Secretary Law, Dani Belo, as special guest, expressed deep regret over the condition of women in state due to polygamy, lack of equal participation in policy decisions and denial of various constitutional rights. He added that the State Legal Service Authority, is a platform to extend legal services to the poor and needy which can be approached whenever required.

In technical session, Itanagar SDPO Deputy SP Degio Gumja highlighting the rising cases of crimes against women, exhorted the participants to know the legal protections available for them. He also gave a demonstration of Arunachal Surakshya mobile App and gave important telephone numbers to seek help, like 9774514616 of Itanagar Woman Police Station.

Women Helpline (WHL) and one-stop centre were initiatives of the central government with allocation of Rs 10 crore for Nirbhaya Fund in 2013 to take pragmatic steps to ensure protection of women, said WHL floor supervisor Dogin Yami. Elaborating on Oju Welfare Association, which runs WHL in the state she said that it had received over 7,000 calls since its commencement on April 1, 2015 and solved 378 cases with 157 more in process. Reachable through 181 toll free number, the WHL facilitates treatment for protection and links to one-stop centre for psychological and physical welfare of the victims rescued with the help of police, she said.
As an NGO,VYK is a facilitator for skill development across India on various issues and has taken up activities to empower women, said its programme officer Rajeev Nirmal. NYP activities centre around skilling youth and solving various social evils, said its president H P Biswas. Skill training is another important activity of the NYP, said its Vice President Pradeep Kumar, adding though India would be the youngest nation by 2020, its people need skill training as only 4.9% of its citizens are skilled.
