Pasighat, Mar 24: Abiding by the advisories issued by the state government in wake of Covid-19, many villages in East Siang district under the Ruksin Sub-Division have completely locked themselves starting Tuesday to prevent any spread of the virus.
As a part of the move, nobody is being allowed to enter or leave the villages except in emergency and medical cases. This is an old Adi traditional customary rule/law, since time immemorial and is called motor or pator system. After Ruksin village (the gateway to Adi belt), rest of the villages will follow soon. This will restrict the movement of people from market area/territory and nobody will be allowed to go outside and vice versa. As ritual by shamans (indigenous priest) are involved in invoking such restrictions, it is regarded as a taboo and non-observance of this will invite strict social punishment. After performing rituals, people will stay at home and impose self-restriction and stick to self-quarantine for eight days. Agricultural and other activities have been completely stopped and in case of any emergency, villagers can go out wearing masks. Residents have been instructed to clean their houses and surrounding areas daily.
Head Gaon Bura of Debing village Yon Yomso said: “Coronavirus is deadly and we should not think that it will not affect our village. Hence, we have decided to take strict precautionary measures to protect our villagers and are following the tips given by the health officials.” “As the people are practising social distancing effectively, there is no chance for corona spread in the village and we have also requested other villages to follow suit,” the Head GB added.
