Tawang, Jan 23: The three-day long Torgya festival, a calendar event marked with monastic dances and rituals began today here in Tawang monastery.
The monastic dances in the courtyard of the monastery started before day break with famous Phachham by the monks donning masks of pig. Various other monastic dances, bursting of ritual cake Zshor or Torgya during evening amid a huge gathering of devotees from villages, Tawang township and Bhutan were other attractions. Before burning the cake, the Abbot and monks performed lots of rituals and chanting of mantras.
According to the tradition of the area, the annual festival is being observed since inception of the monastery to protect all sentient beings from natural calamities and untoward incidents and also for a good harvest. In early days some portion of grains collected by the monks from different villages were used for Torgya rituals.
On the second day, the Abbot will bless the devotees with long life initiation and on the last day monks will perform monastic dances to be continued throughout the day depicting various stories of Buddhist siddhas and history of Tawang. DIPRO
