DOIMUKH, Nov 25: Rajiv Gandhi University Students’ Union (RGUSU) today took out a torch light march as a mark of protest against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB)-2019 which was attended by hundreds of students from the university including the members of All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) and Northeast Students’ Organization (NESO).
Agitating students shouted slogans against Chief Minister Pema Khandu, MP (East) Tapir Gao and MP (West) cum Union Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs Kiren Rijiju. Later, they also burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Coming down heavily on BJP government, NESO coordinator Pritam Waii Sonam said “Instead of announcing developmental packages for the Northeast, central government is only giving us AFSPA and CAB.” He added that there will be no more requests, prayers or appeasement from the indigenous people of NE and we will continue our democratic protests against this bill till our last breath. Lamenting the apathy of the central government, the NESO leader said that AAPSU has been fighting against the illegal Chakma and Hajongs refugees since last 50 years but the Modi-led central government has overridden it which has deeply hurt the indigenous sentiments. Vice President AAPSU, Tayuk Sonam said “CAB is for a  particular set of religious communities and if passed, lakhs of illegal immigrants will get citizenship as well as lands rights. So we stand strongly against the Bill to protect our land and our future.” “The said Bill is against the people of Arunachal and against Northeast,” stated President RGUSU Dopum Sonam, adding that this protest is a reflection of the  anti-CAB sentiments of  the people of Arunachal. Instead of bringing development, central government is adamant to impose CAB in the country, asserted RGUSU President. RGU Research Scholars’ Forum General Secretary Prem Taba said that CAB is not an ordinary bill, but a directive from the central government to kill the indigenous people. There should be no bargaining in this, we demand a complete scrapping of the bill, he added.
Apart from RGU students, NESO and AAPSU, Arunachal Students’ Union Shillong, Students’ Union of NERIST, NERIST Research Scholars’ Association and various other students’ organizations attend the torchlight procession.
