ITANAGAR, Jul 10:  In view on the continuing lackadaisical attitude of the denizens toward COVID-19 Appropriate Behaviour, IGP (Law & Order) Chukhu Apa along with Superintendent of Police, ICR Jimmy Chiram, SDPO K Sikom accompanied by a team of police personnel today took to the streets and conducted a mask cum motor vehicle checking drive in the capital region.
Speaking to the reporters, the IGP said that around 10 checkpoints have been installed within the ICR to monitor the violators of Covid-19 SOPs. “We will ensure that the checking will be mobile and people not wearing masks will be challaned accordingly on the spot,” he said, adding that 6 checkpoints have been installed in Itanagar and 4 in Naharlagun. “The police has observed that many denizens don’t follow physical distancing and only wear masks when spotted by the police. The city police are using cameras to capture people not wearing masks and will punish them accordingly,” the IGP asserted, adding that the collective negligence is the main reason behind the rise of Covid cases in the ICR.
While informing that most of the vehicles plying are without valid registration numbers or with tampered numbers, IGP informed that initiatives are on to ensure people's safety through adherence to traffic rules. “I appeal to the denizens to wear helmets, register their vehicle number and follow strict traffic rules for their own safety and safety of pedestrians,” he said. Meanwhile, SDPO, Itanagar Kadam Sikom informed that at least 666 violators have been challaned today for not following COVID-19 Appropriate Behaviour that led to the realisation of Rs 1,93,680 as penalties.
