Lazu, Mar 3: The Tirap  District Administration in collaboration with Tirap Police and Tax & Excise department carried out massive opium destruction in Lazu Circle today.  A total of 40 personnel took part in the programme to curb the menace of opium cultivation and consumption in which  27.5 acres of illegal opium fields were destroyed.
SP Tirap said that despite many awareness campaigns conducted at Lazu circle, few villagers are still involved in illegal opium/poppy cultivation thus prompting the DA to take action. Apart from opium/poppy plant more dangerous narcotics like brown sugar and heroin are being produced which will have a catastrophic effect on society especially the younger generation, the SP added.
EAC Lazu D.K. Thungdok informed that earlier series of awareness campaigns on drug menace were conducted in Lazu area in which the farming community of Lazu circle appealed the government for alternative crops to replace opium cultivation. Pigs were distributed to farmers/beneficiaries of Lazu village by the District Administration to encourage farmers towards other means of livelihood generation.
