PASIGHAT, Jan 27: Acting on a tip-off from villagers, a team of the Central Mobile Squad has recently foiled a major timber smuggling attempt on Siang river.
An alert was sent that a huge consignment of illegal logs are ready to be rafted and transported to Dibrugarh via Siang near Seram and Kongkul villages under Mebo Sub-Division. A team of the Central Mobile Squad under Chief Conservator of Forest, Central Arunachal Circle and Pasighat Forest Division subsequently carried out a series of checking drives from January 23-25 and seized and destroyed hundreds of logs. As per sources, while some of the logs were on the ground to be dropped in the river, others were just about to be shipped for sale in Dibrugarh. Most of the illegal timber operations were detected from the Tarotamak river side area between Namsing and Gadum village. The seized logs were then destroyed by using chainsaw machines. When contacted, the Mebo RFO confirmed that seizure and destruction of logs had been continuing since the last three days. Meanwhile, the Central Mobile Squad is going all-out to put a brake on rampant illegal timber operations not only under Pasighat Forest Division but also in nearby forest divisions which come under CCF Central Arunachal Circle, Pasighat.

More reports are coming in about the crackdowns on illegal timber operations under Seram Forest Beat and Divisional Forest Officer, Pasighat Forest Division Tashi Mize along with Range Forest Officer, Mebo RF Oson Tayeng are personally monitoring the ground zero operations.
