ITANAGAR, May 18 : Thousands joined the protest rally  held today at Longding against the killing of a civilian by the Indian Army organized by the Wancho society under the banner of Wancho Council.
Holding placards and banners, members of Wancho Council, Wancho Cultural Society, All Wancho Women Welfare Society, Wancho Students Union,  Longding District Students Union and others joined the rally  demanding justice for the victims and calling an end to atrocities committed by the armed forces in the area.
"We have submitted memorandum to the Governor through Deputy Commissioner Longding District," informed President, Wancho Council, Shompha Wangsa. Deputy Commissioner has assured us to fulfill the demands made by the council and even Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister are in touch with the district administration on the issue, he added.
Wancho Council on behalf of the Wancho Society  has submitted a four-point representation to the Governor demanding the arrest of culprits involved in the incident, Rs 50 Lakh compensation by the 19th Sikh Regiment to the deceased family, Rs 10 lakh for the severely  injured persons and Rs 5 lakh for another injured person. Job for a deceased family member by the state government and inclusion of community based organisations  in the inquiry committee.
Condemning the incident, President Wancho Students Union, Pongngoi Joham said "Enough is enough. Armed forces cannot misuse its power in the pretext of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the TCL areas.  People here are living peacefully and always respect the armed forces but the Army has failed to maintain cordial relations with civilians."
The Council has also served one-week timeframe  to fulfill the demands failing which they will  continue their democratic movement.
Meanwhile extending support to the  Wancho Council, All Tangsa Students Union (ATSU) has also demanded the state government's immediate intervention and SIT constituted for early justice. Culprits  should be terminated from the job and put behind bars under non-bailable  act, it added.
