ITANAGAR, Aug 29: Ace mountaineer Taka Tamut, and Colonel, Sarfraz Singh, Director, NIMAS  from Arunachal Pradesh were conferred with the prestigious Tenzing Norgay Adventure Award -2019 on the occasion of National Sports Day 2020 on Saturday.
The award was virtually presented by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind in a virtual event wherein more than 60 award winners were awarded National Sports and Adventure Awards. Every year on August 29, the birth anniversary of Indian hockey wizard, Dhyan Chand is celebrated as 'National Sports Day', across India.
The award was conferred to Taka in recognization of his effort put in to locate the spot where an AN 32 aircraft had crashed and for scaling Mount Everest (2018) without a Sherpa.
While Sarfraz Singh was awarded with the highest honour for adventure sports in India for his unmatched dedication in land adventure and for successfully leading an expedition team to the top of Mount Elbrus (Europe), Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, and Mount Everest.
“ Both Taka and Sarfraz Singh have made our state proud by winning the most prestigious award in the adventure sports category with their sheer dedication and selfless deeds,” noted, State Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Mama Natung while assuring to give the required support to NIMAS Dirang.
Natung said that the state government is making every effort to make Arunachal a "powerhouse of sports", adding that the sports department has set a target to train the players who will represent the state and the country together in the Olympic Games. (2028–30).
“ The commitment of the state government towards the development of sports sectors can be gauged by stadiums coming in various districts. Emphasis has been given on policy and programs for developing infrastructure, nurturing talents and designing specialized programs for the overall development of sports,” Natung emphasized.
