Doimukh, Jan 27: Minister Department of Indigenous Affairs, Cultural Affairs and Education, Taba Tedir, on Monday stressed on the preservation, protection and promotion of indigenous tribal culture and traditions.
Tedir, who was addressing the 20th Foundation Day celebrations of Nyedar Namlo at the Rono Maidan today, said that it is high time to think and act to protect our rich cultural heritage and traditional values from the onslaught of westernization. “It is a matter of great concern that today's generation cannot speak their dialect fluently and uses other languages to communicate. This signal is not good and if we do not act now, we may lose our identity one day." Referring to the establishment of the new Department of Indigenous Affairs (DIA), Tedir said that the department would work and support all those who would come forward to safeguard indigenous activities, including research, studies, books on indigenous activities such as writing, preservation of old manuscript, etc. He also appealed to scholars and indigenous leaders and thinkers to come forward to share suggestions and ideas for this.
Local MLA Tana Hali Tara, speaking as guest of honour at the ceremony recalled the contribution made by many senior leaders of society in the field of conservation. “The selfless and hard work done by the previous senior leaders of society must be remembered so that it becomes an inspiration to others," he added.
Earlier the dignitaries visited the newly established Indigenous Tribal research & Study center building, library and museum.
