ITANAGAR, Jan 15: Tame Phassang, the BJP corporator from Ward No. 17 of the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) was elected unopposed as the first mayor of the state capital today, while NPP corporator from Ward No. 7 Biri Basang will be the city’s Deputy Mayor. 
In another development on the day, Pasighat Municipal Council chose two women people’s representatives, Okiam Moyong Borang and Rebeka Panyang Megu as its Chief Councillor and Deputy Chief Councillor respectively.
The IMC election process was held under supervision of the Department of Town Planning & ULB here at the Dorjee Khandu Convention Centre. Interestingly, the Janata Dal-United (JDU) which won the second-highest number of seats (9) in the IMC elections didn’t file nominations for both Mayor and Deputy Mayor chairs. Speaking to the media, the newly elected capital mayor Tame Phassang expressed gratitude to his supporters and Chief Minister Pema Khandu for keeping faith in him. “I have been assigned to serve you as the mayor of the IMC and the election process is also over now. Irrespective of party affiliation, caste, creed, religion and wards we all have to work unitedly for the development of the corporation and the state as a whole,” the new mayor stated.
When asked about his plans for the IMC and its Smart City projects, Phassang said that law & order, sanitation, roads and all basic amenities will be his top priorities. “We won’t tolerate any kind of lackadaisical attitude in maintaining  law & order as well as in any developmental works. The capital will definitely become a better place for living,” he asserted while adding that all the pending  Smart City projects will be dealt properly so that maximum benefits and works are executed on the ground.  He further appealed to the capital denizens to extend all-possible support to the Team IMC in making Itanagar one of the best capital cities in the country.
Earlier, the swearing-in ceremony of all the 20 newly elected corporators was held at the DK Convention Hall. The ten elected corporators of the BJP, nine from the JDU and one from the NPP took the oath of office which were administered by Director, Town Planning & ULB Likha Suraj.  MLA Itanagar Techi Kaso, Commissioner IMC Cheechung Chukhu and other officials from the IMC and Department of Town Planning & ULB attended the event. The newly elected Chief Councillor (CC) of Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) Okiam Moyong Borang and Deputy Chief Councillor (DCC) Rebeka Panyang Megu, both elected unopposed were administered the oath of office by East Siang DC-cum-Presiding Officer Dr. Kinny Singh today at the DC Conference Hall in Pasighat.

Earlier, the DC also administered the oath of office to all the eight newly elected councillors of the PMC. During the first meeting, they were briefed on their roles and functions and felicitated. Addressing the meeting, the DC hoped they will work with team spirit and coordination on the key issues like sanitation, cleanliness and garbage management, innovative revenue generation and creation of sustainable income generating assets within the municipal area. The councillors shared their priorities for improvement of their wards in terms of street lighting, drainage and other civic amenities.
The DC also sought the support of the councillors for success and promotion of the month-long ‘Beautiful City Campaign’ to be launched by the DA from January 26.
