Mechukha, Jan 6: The Tagin community of Shi-Yomi District celebrated Si-Donyi Hilo festival, a significant cultural event that honours the Earth (Si) and the Sun (Donyi), at Mechukha with full fervour and gaiety. This year marked the Silver Jubilee anniversary of the festival which was first celebrated in the year 2001 in Shi-Yomi District.
Tungge Loya, Deputy Commissioner, Shi-Yomi District graced the celebration as Chief Guest, Tanil Komi, President, Boh Ramo Bokar Welfare Society was the Guest of Honour. Minister of Labor and Employment, Information Public Relations Nyato Dukam also graced the event with his presence as the Chief Patron along with Tana Yaho, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mechuka as the Patron. Special guests included Sang Khandu Thongdok, Superintendent of Police, Shi-Yomi District and Norbu Tsering Naksang, President, Neh Nang Cultural Development Society.
The festivities started with the traditional prayers to the Yagging (altar) by the gathering seeking prosperity and protection which was followed by colourful traditional dance performances. The members of the 1st Si Donyi Celebration Committee of Mechukha, 2001 were felicitated during the event for initiating the celebration of the festival in the district.
Loya highlighted the importance of preserving our cultural system and identity by celebrating such local festivals. He also exhorted the importance of maintaining brotherhood and unity among different communities by participating in each other’s festivals.
Minister Nyato Dukam also stressed the need to maintain continuity in traditions and cultural practices. He encouraged the Tagin Community of Shi-Yomi to maintain their traditions and continue celebrating their festival in a grand manner.
