PASIGHAT, Mar 1:The volunteers of the NSS Unit of Jawaharlal Nehru College in association with Adi Baane Kebang, East Siang district unit carried out flood control works at Seram village in the bank of river Siang under active supervision of the SEEANG committee which has been organizing several voluntary flood control works for the last two years.
The social service was spread over two days on Saturday and Sunday and sand filled gunny bags were erected as spars with binding wire for diverting and minimising soil erosion during monsoon floods. It is worth mentioning that the series of floods in Siang during the last two years have caused massive soil erosion due to which the Seram village was washed away. The Mebo Dhola road which is the lifeline of Lower Mebo villages in East Siang that connects the lower part of Lower Dibang Valley district and also with Assam at Dhola and Tinsukia, is on the verge of getting washed away as Siang has already reached a point which is barely 5 metres away from Seram village. However, a major flood control work is also undergoing at the north of Sigar village funded by the government from where Siang river current tilts toward the left bank in Lower Mebo villages.
At the sidelines of the social service, student volunteers of JN College NSS unit said it was a good experience for them to work for the people of these flood affected villages. NSS Programme Officers cum Assistant Professors of the college Dr. Temin Payum, Ing Perme and Dr. Kento Kadu including Kalen Komut from ABK East Siang Unit and ABK WW representative Jimmy Dai Doming spoke on the occasion and felt for requirement of more flood control measurements.
