PASIGHAT, Oct 24: Amidst much hue and cry over the Siang River turning abnormal with high turbidity and other behavioral patterns causing untold miseries to the settlers along Siang and Brahmaputra valley, the three federal units of All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) today took out a rally demanding a water treaty between India and China.
The rally started from the Dy. Commissioner office , Pasighat and culminated at main market. The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) also endorsed the stand taken by its Siang valley based federal units i.e All Upper Siang District Students’ Union, All Siang District Students’ Union, All East Siang District Students’ Union regarding the unpredictable and unusual behavior of Siang River in its color, texture and flow since last one and a half year.
In their memorandum to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh submitted through Deputy Commissioner, Pasighat, the student unions demanded for a permanent solution to the Siang River issue through a water treaty with China not only for sharing of information of Siang River flow, but also for use and regulation of the mighty Siang. The union made a mention that China is trying to divert the Siang River which is proved by floating debris of at least 100 numbers of barrels/drums being used in large construction activities.
The AAPSU and its three district federal units said that the recent drying up and then unprecedented water surge the very next day in Siang river that brought down along with it several floating barrels bearing Chinese alphabet insignia of Isocyanate (C6 H9 O2 N2) which is an explosive mainly used in heavy construction sites have clearly vindicated the AAPSU’s stand that something amiss is going on across the border which the Union government has time and again played down on the pretext of natural calamities.
AAPSU General Secretary Tobom Dai said, “it is disheartening to note that despite havocs and inundation caused by flash floods of Siang River whereby several villages that have been established since ages were uprooted and riverine eco-system badly affected the government of India still remains nonchalant and indifferent to the woes of its people”.
It is time that the Government of India asserts and reaches out for a “Water Treaty" rather than remaining in denial mode lest one or the other day all the rivers emerging from Tibet region which is under Chinese occupation will face the same fate that of river Siang, said the AAPSU.
