ITANAGAR, Jun 8: An important steel bridge connecting the Upper Damsite area with other colonies in Naharlagun suffered extensive corrosive damage due to prevailing extreme atmospheric conditions.
Video footage with few photos shared with this reporter by Consumer Rights Organisation (AP-Unit), office secretary, Talling Tallo reveals that rust has formed all over iron joints threatening the bridge's structural integrity.
Tallo, while interacting with this reporter stated that the said steel bridge is in a sorry state and the right portion of the bridge has now bent downward due to extensive corrosion on its supporting rods.
Tallo who made a survey of the bridge today and lives nearby told that sensing the gravity of the situation, he earlier had hung a banner with a message "weak bridge" on both ends of the bridge to warn commuters about the impending danger.
" When I inquired with nearby residents about the bridge, they told me that they don't know in which year the bridge was built however confirmed the structure was there for the last 10-15 years as they can remember, " Tallo told.
He further requested concerned authority to intervene and repair/reconstruct the bridge immediately as the bridge may come down crashing anytime.
When contacted Naharlagun Division PWD Executive Engineer, Techi Nabo assured to repair the damaged bridge at the earliest.
EE said very soon the old steel bridge would be replaced with a double lane RCC bridge with a 20-meter span and Rs 4.20 lakhs has been alloted under the CM Decongestion Scheme of capital complex and Chief Minister Comprehensive state road development program (CMCSRDP) for this.
"The tender process is already completed and work has also been awarded to contractors. Due to nationwide lockdown, the reconstruction work was delayed, " he told.
Under the same scheme, EE informed that another steel bridge connecting Polo Colony with G Extension will be replaced with a double lane RCC bridge (30 meters) for which tender work has also been completed.
