NAHARLAGUN, Feb 17: As a part of the extension program for the faculty and students of Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, Naharlagun, a dedication program was organized on February 16 to commemorate the 19th death anniversary of Tomo Riba.

To share with the students of the institute the ideologies and the vision of the leader whose name the institute bears, a Tomo Riba Memorial Display was dedicated at the library of the institute. At the outset, Dr. Moji Jini, Director, TRIHMS narrated the origin of the hospital and shared how TRIHMS had a humble beginning as a small dispensary in the early 70s. He added that it was started to cater to the early settlers and labourers who established the Capital Complex and since then the metamorphosis from a small dispensary to a reputed institute has been a long journey.

Retired surgeon Dr. KK Dey, who has been servicing the hospital for the greater part of the history of the institute was also present. He shared with the students the early days of their work in the hospital when the resources were very scarce and narrated from his real life experiences the hardships and joys that he underwent while serving the patients of the state.

 

This was followed by a presentation of bio-note on Late Tomo Riba. The ceremony was also marked by the submission of documents by Minoti Riba, wife of Late Tomo Riba, donating her mortal remains on her death to the anatomy laboratory of the TRIHMS.

She said that most important thing in life is to be of help to each other. “It was not just a dream of my husband, but the whole state to get a medical college. The dreams have been fulfilled by institution of TRIHMS. And I cannot express the gratitude I have for the state government for naming the institute after my late husband who had such deep attachment with the hospital,” she said. 80 years old Mrs. Riba who is a former cooperator, interacted with the students and enthralled all with her anecdotes.

Dean, TRIHMS Dr. P. Jayakumar in his closing remarks, narrated how he had to go to Kolkata to find a cadaver for the first batch of students.

Faculty members and students also spoke in the session. Associate Professor Dr. Devender Sachdeva   shared his personal story of organ donation by his parents. Professor and Head, Anatomy Dr. N. K. Bezbaruah accepted the donation on the behalf of the department. Associate Professor Dr. K. Praveen Kumar also spoke on the occasion.

Various students of the first batch of TRIHMS shared their stories of compassion and service and the inspiration they derived from the ideologies of the leader to carry the legacy forward.
