ITANAGAR, Sep 13: Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women(APSCW) on Friday organised a One Day Legal Awareness Programme for students and teaching staff of Government Higher Secondary School Arunadaya in collaboration with Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Service Authority (APSLSA) and Arunachal Pradesh Women Welfare Society (APWWS).
APSCW Chairperson Radhilu Chai Techi while exhorting students to aim high in life, said that gender discrimination at home and schools by parents and teachers should not be encouraged and all students irrespective of sex should get equal treatment. Further, the Chairperson told them to take equal interest in sports and extra curriculum activities besides studies for all round development of personality. Resource Person & Child Welfare Committee Chairperson Kani Nada Maling spoke on Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the legal provisions available. She encouraged students to report sexual offenses to their family, police, Child Welfare Committee, person whom they trust or call 1098, the toll free number of Child Helpline. Resource Person & Psychiatrist Dr. Tame Kena from TRIMHS highlighted the side effects of drugs which causes brain damage and other mental health problems and advised students to be aware of drug abuses. He further informed the punishment provisions for drug peddlers which is five years jail that can extend up to ten years.  Resource Person & APWWS Vice President Tojum Potom while elaborating about mental health, encouraged students to cultivate positive thinking. Advocate & Resource Person Raknu Konya elaborated on Recording of Marriage Act, 2008 and Victim Compensation Schemes which can be availed by victims of rape, motor vehicle accidents etc. While exhorting on marriage registration, she explained the benefits of having marriage certificate as it can help in medical cases, studies outside state, passport making and so on. Vice Principal T L Nyodu gave vote of thanks to the participants.

The programme was attended by APSCW Member Likha Joya, its President Dipti Bengia Tadar, members of APWWS, teaching faculties & staff of GHSS Arunadaya and more than 200 students. APSCW PR
