ITANAGAR, May 31: World No Tobacco Day was observed today enthusiastically in various parts of the state today with the intention of drawing attention to the various negative health effects that arises due to tobacco use.
Rajiv Gandhi University observed the day at its campus with oath taking by the students, faculty members and staff to discard tobacco in any form. In his message Vice Chancellor Professor Saket Kushwaha expressed his concern about increasing habit of chewing tobacco and smoking among school and college going youths and appealed the RGU fraternity to join hands together to create a tobacco free environment in the state. NSS volunteers also actively took part in the programme and distributed pamphlets for awareness creation.
In West Kameng, the day was observed at General Hospital Bomdila with the organisation of a rally participated by the staff of the hospital and the DTCP team. Later, a meeting on the ill-effects of tobacco and its consequences and the status of tobacco consumption in the country and state was deliberated upon. A video on the ill-effects of smoking and chewing tobacco was also screened to create awareness on the issue.
District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) Tawang observed the day organising an awareness procession-cum-mass rally participated by officers and staff of DMO and District Hospital Tawang, police personnel, students among others.
While addressing a meeting based on this year’s theme “Tobacco and Lung Health”, DMO Tawang advised all students and other participants in the meeting to spread awareness about harmful effects of tobacco to family and friends. He also distributed prizes for winners of drawing competition organized by DTCC Tawang based on this year’s theme. In the second half, DTCC Tawang in collaboration with the administrative heads of Tawang Monastery and their team officially declared Tawang Monastery Campus a ‘Tobacco Free Zone’.
Medo observed the day at the Tamla – Du festival ground with a free health camp organized jointly by Brahmakumaris Rajyoga Meditation Centre and Zonal Hospital Tezu. DC Lohit Prince Dhawan said that an annual campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and to discourage use of tobacco in any form. Commandant 20 Madras Regiment Colonel Vikram Nalawade appealed the youth to shun militancy and join Indian Army and visit the army camp for counselling and guidance for de-addiction.
On the occasion DMO Lohit Dr S Chai Pul highlighted the activities of Rehab Centre being run by the Zonal Hospital in collaboration with Brahmakumaris Rajyoga & Education Centre Tezu and shared how effectively the Rehab Center is facilitating the tobacco and opium addicts to get rid of addiction.
Earlier, the Brahmakumaris Rajyoga & Education Centre Tezu accompanied by hundreds of youths and common public participated in a mass rally sensitizing the ill effects of addiction.
District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC), Khonsa in collaboration with Arunachal Pradesh Legal Services Authority, Tirap Unit organised World No Tobacco Day at Khonsa Bazar Taxi Stand amidst a huge participation of people from Khonsa town and nearby villages.
At Dambuk in Lower Dibang Valley district, a mass awareness rally and meeting was organised to mark the day attended by CO Arvind Pangging, Programme Officers of the health department, etc.DIPRO/RGU Press Release
