ITANAGAR, Jun 5: World Environment Day (WED) was observed on Friday all across Arunachal Pradesh with commitment despite the late surge of Covid cases.
Governor Brig. (Dr.) B. D. Mishra (Retd.) and First Lady Neelam Misra participated in a plantation programme here at Raj Bhavan joined by the officers and staff. Speaking on the occasion, Governor called on the people of the state, especially the youths to commit themselves to protect and sustain the pristine environment of the state. Keeping in tune with this year’s theme which is ‘Biodiversity’, First Lady unveiled the ‘Liberty’ signage of the butterfly open garden of Raj Bhavan which hosts a large number of vector plants, the habitation of a variety of species of butterflies.
On the occasion Governor felicitated and rewarded Shivsankar Mahanto, Baburam Chetry and Anil Deori, the dedicated workers of the Forests Department working in the Raj Bhavan.
To celebrate WED 2020, Arunachal ENVIS Hub under the Department of Env. & Forests conducted a 3-day online quiz competition which was participated by 30 students of Class VI-XII from 23 different schools of the state.
Dohu Yakap (Class-XII)BKM, Doimukh stood 1st, Dohu Yaku (Class-VIII), Government Middle School Chimpu 2nd, Dohu Yadam (Class VI), Little Flower School, Itanagar 3rd and Tobi Ngomdir (Class X) of GHSS, Aalo ranked 4th .
In East Siang district, WED was observed in Pasighat through a tree plantation programme at the premises of IGJHSS by the Department of Forest & Environment participated by the volunteers from AdiSU District Unit and Tai Ahom Students’ Union. DFO (Territory) Pasighat, Tashi Mize along with the volunteers took pledge to protect and conserve the rich forest cover and gave awareness by displaying posters on the themes to save trees, discourage deforestation etc.
Meanwhile, coming forward to contribute its share during the current Covid-19 times, the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) known for its activities in nature conservation has provided essential commodities to the workers assisting in the functioning of the district’s quarantine centres.
In Tawang, a plantation drive organized by 38th Bn SSB Tawang and NGO Human Rights First marked the day which was participated by Tawang MLA Tsering Tashi.
Tashi planted saplings in and around the premises of 38th Bn which had the theme “Green Suits me, let us keep it that way”. Tawang Riders Club also joined the event with a cycling rally. As this year’s WED coincided with Buddha Purnima according to the local calendar, after plantation the members assembled at SSB Budh Mandir within the campus and hoisted the five-coloured Buddhist religious flag and prayed for the welfare of all sentient beings.
Later, the MLA interacted with the SSB officers and jawans and members of Human Rights First and appreciated their contributions to the cause of better environment and the civic action programmes during lockdown.
