ITANAGAR, Dec 28: On the occasion of the 134th foundation day of the Indian National Congress (INC), Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today organized a ‘flag march’ with the theme ‘Save India-Save Constitution’ here at the state capital.
The march started from Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan and culminated at the Raj Bhawan. Hundreds of Congress workers and executive members joined the march as a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act passed by the BJP-led NDA government as well as for issues such as unprecedented economic slowdown, collapse of banking system and others.
Speaking at the rally, former MP and former President APCC, Takam Sanjoy said that CAA is nothing but an instrument to divide the North Eastern region on the basis of religion. “While the entire state and the country is expressing dissatisfaction with CAA, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are adamant on implementing it,” Sanjoy said. “It was the Congress that fought with the British for decades for the freedom of the country in the form of non-violence. But today, the BJP government has endangered the nation’s sovereignty,” Sanjoy alleged.
He also urged the state government to clarify its stand on the issue of Chakma-Hajong refugees settled in the state. He said that the state government has so far failed to respond to the apprehension of the population of the state on the issue of refugees. Since the state government and student organizations have failed to address the refugee issue, Sanjoy affirmed that APCC would leave no stone unturned to fight for the rights of the state’s indigenous people.
“Government is projecting the Inner Line Permit (ILP) mechanism as a safeguard from the influx of illegal immigrants/refugees. But we all know that ILP cannot make our state secure, as the BEFR-1873 can be revoked anytime by this BJP government. Today it’s Assam and tomorrow it may be Arunachal and if today Assam is burning then definitely it will affect its neighbouring state too,” asserted Sanjoy.
Later, the APCC handed over a memorandum to the Governor for immediate scraping of CAA. In the memorandum it termed the Act as communal and undemocratic.
