ITANAGAR, Sep 7: In a rather shocking development, National gold medalist in Archery, Sorang Yumi, who has also two International and 20 National medals to her name threatened to surrender her medals and certificates alleging irregularities in the department of Sports.
Yumi also filed a complaint letter in the SIC against the Director, Sports alleging illegal and arbitrary appointment of his own kith & kin in the department under Khelo India Central Scheme as Archery coach by adopting a corrupt method on July 19 last.
Addressing the media persons at the press club here on Tuesday, Yumi said that the Director of Sports had advertised a walk-in-Interview on December 29, 2020 for the appointment of 6 posts of coaches in various disciplines.
One of the posts was for Archery Coach, which was for the Independent Golden Jubilee (IGJ), Government Higher Secondary School, Pasighat.
She said that the advertisement clearly stated that first preference would be given to past champions who represented India at recognised international competition under recognised SF/Association in respective sports.
“Surprisingly, despite overwhelming performance in the interview and also having qualified for the post of Archery coach as per the preference, I was not selected. Rather one Taba Nikia, who does not even have a single national or international medal, was selected,” she said, adding that Taba Nikia is a relative of the Director of Sports.
Yumi said as per the guidelines of Khelo India and the advertisement, there is no scoring system for appointment of Coaches. Moreover, the appointment was to be made on the basis of achievement and showcasing original certificates during the walk in interview. She also made it clear that if the government fails to address her grievances, she will have no choice but to surrender her medals for the sake of the upcoming young athletes of the state.
Meanwhile, Sorang Tada, brother of Yumi said that the original score-sheet, where both the applicants signed after physical archery performance is missing. Moreover, the department provided a self-styled score sheet manufactured by them when sought for appropriate documents on the selection of Taba Nikia, through RTI.
“There is illegality in the score sheet issued by the department to us. This is an open and shut case if the state government really wants justice to prevail for a deprived applicant,” he added.
Earlier, Secretary Sports & Youth Affairs, Anirudh S Singh in an order issued on August 17 had ordered the Director of Sports to review the entire process of evaluation in the line of preference and relevant guidelines.
It also directed the board to submit the report within three working days to his office.
