KHONSA, Jun 21: Special Court, POCSO, Khonsa today convicted one Janjam Wangsu from Nyausa village under Longding district for raping a minor girl (11 years) and sentenced him to a rigorous imprisonment of twenty years along with a fine.
On December 6 last year, taking advantage of the  absence of the victim’s stepmother, convict Janjam (26) along with two of his friends came to her residence in the pretext of asking for rice beer. When the victim went outside to clean utensils, Janjam forcefully gagged her and after taking her towards the National Highway of Don Bosco Colony, committed the heinous offence. The traumatized victim fell ill and even stopped taking food and finally disclosed the incident to her stepmother who then lodged an FIR at the Longding Police Station. Inspector O. Lego conducted the investigation and Inspector A. Chama filed the charge sheet. Charge against the convict was framed on March 15 this year and during trial it transpired that the victim suffered from prolonged trauma and ailment for which she had to take medical treatment at Dibrugarh and counseling at a Prayer Centre. Special Public Prosecutor N. Hallang conducted the prosecution and examined seven witnesses amid the restricted virtual court functioning due to Covid.
Special Judge, POCSO H. Kashyap expeditiously completed the trial, convicting Janjam for aggravated sexual assault u/s 06 of the POCSO Act and sentencing him to a 20-yr rigorous imprisonment plus a fine. The case has been forwarded to the District Legal Services Authority, Longding for providing adequate compensation to the victim under Arunachal Pradesh Victim Compensation Scheme, 2011. DIPRO
