ITANAGAR, Jun 14: Abraham Tagit Sorang, the second mountaineer from the state to scale the highest peak Mt. Everest after Tashi Yangjom this year received a warm welcome by the Sorang Welfare Society (SWS) here on Sunday.
24-year-old Sorang had joined National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS), Dirang in the year 2013, when the institute first stepped in the state. He is also the tenth climber from the institute to scale the highest peak in the world.
Sorang is among the four selected members to be recruited and trained under NIMAS in its first batch. He is from Kra-Dadi district and has scaled Mt Kang Yatse, Ladakh in July 2019.
Speaking to reporters, Sorang informed that the expedition to Mt Everest usually had to be completed by May 29 but it stretched to June 1 due to bad weather conditions , and he was back to base camp on June 3.
He said, during the expedition, the team learnt a lot on the weather reading and also to tackle any situation that comes forth, ‘uncalled’. The most important concern for us was to make sure that our health was in the finest condition to continue the summit, he added.
“Scaling Mt Everest will always remain a moment to cherish in my life. However, it made me happier when Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Special Commissioner of Police Robin Hibu called on me to congratulate,” he said.
For persons interested in mountaineering and other allied sports, he urged them to  join a course in NIMAS. One can avail the details on the sponsorship from the Department of Tourism or Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs.
The summit included forty members from NIMAS, Sherpas and others. Sorang also acknowledged the love and support showered by the people of the state and his family.
Earlier, Union Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs- Kiren Rijiju ,Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Governor Dr. BD Mishra had congratulated Sorang for scaling Mt Everest.
