ITANAGAR, Dec 6: State Assembly Speaker Pasang D Sona on Sunday exhorted the people of Monigong and Shi-Yomi district in general to involve themselves in agriculture and horticulture activities to generate a sustainable economy. Sona was speaking as chief guest on the occasion of Podi-Barbi festival at Monigong.
The Podi-Barbi, the main harvest festival of the Adi community of Shi Yomi district, is celebrated to extend gratitude to deities and Mother Nature for prosperous and surplus production of crops.
Stating that Shi-Yomi district particularly Monigong, Pidi, Tato and Rapum circle are very fertile in comparison to Mechukha, and conducive for agriculture and horticulture activities, the Speaker exhorted the people especially youths of the area to involve in those activities for a sustainable income.
Sona, who represents the district in the Legislative Assembly, also lauded the three communities of Adi viz. Boh, Bokar and Ramo for maintaining their age-old culture and tradition through the festival.
“Loss of culture is loss of identity, similarly loss of language is the greatest loss any society can suffer,” Sona asserted while stressing on the importance of preservation of mother language. Learning other languages is good, but one should never forget their own mother language as it is our identity, he said while exhorting the parents to train their children to speak in their own dialects.
Reiterating that the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu is committed to development of the area, Sona appealed to the public not to shy away from their duties and focus on quality control of various developmental projects coming up in the district.
Earlier, a colourful mega dance was presented by the students and womenfolk of Monigong. But the main attraction was the ritual performance and offering of prayers at the Podi-Barbi altar for universal peace and bumper harvest of crops in the coming years.
DC Shi-Yomi, SP, ZPM Monigong among others attended the celebrations.
