ITANAGAR, Jun 25: On the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which is observed every year on June 26, Governor Brig. (Dr.) B. D. Mishra (Retd.) has called upon the state’s people, particularly the youths, non-profit organizations, private sector and the state government to conceptualize, plan and launch a concerted campaign that would lead to the making of a drug-free Arunachal Pradesh.
While stressing that the state needs a balanced approach to eliminate drug trafficking and ensure viable alternatives to the reformed drug addicts to earn livelihoods, Governor reminded the severe negative impacts experienced by families, women and children and the repercussions on law and order due to drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
Stating that drug abuse among the younger generation has emerged as a major global problem, he underscored the need for continuous and sustained awareness on the harmful effects of drugs through innovative methods. Skill building, vocational training and self-employment are the effective tools for social and economic reintegration of the drug-dependent persons, Governor suggested. He also appreciated the recent successful anti-drug operations conducted by the State Police and lauded the Director General of Police RP Upadhyaya and the officials of State Anti-Narcotics Task Force.
