ITANAGAR, Nov 28: Minister Sports & Youth Affairs, Mama Natung inaugurated an international standard Sports Climbing Wall installed at the Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy (SLSA), Chimpu here on Sunday.
Lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering wall are the three disciplines of activities that can be performed in the 15 metre  tall sports climbing wall. The state government has already approved sports climbing as one of the sports disciplines in SLSA.
Speaking to reporters, Natung informed that the climbing wall is the first in the entire Northeast, which is of international standard. It is an endeavour by the state government to provide the best facility to climbing enthusiasts, so that they can get standard training, he said.
The minister said by providing international standard training, the department looks forward to preparing athletes to represent the state in the 2024 Olympics.
“As this is the first ever sports introduced in the state and also during the reign of the BJP government, I hope it will benefit our youths, especially those who are into climbing activities,” he said.
Natung, who also experienced the activity on the day, said the quality of the climbing wall is top notch. However, if there is any kind of problem, the construction company will accordingly repair it, he said. Earlier, addressing the gathering, Natung appealed to the public to protect every single government infrastructure. 

National Coach and also Judge by profession, Shripad Sapkal informed that lead climbing and speed climbing is of 15m in height and 6m in width respectively. And the bouldering wall is 4.5m and 22m in width, which is according to  international standards.  
With such an international standard facility, the state can host national and international competition. Moreover, the structure is first of its kind in Northeast, he added.
Sakpal also informed that there are many students of SLSA who are interested in the sports. Also, the academy is looking forward to enrolling more students.
“As of now, there is only one coach appointed for the sports by the department and the association. However, the numbers will increase as per the enrollment of the students,” he added.
Meanwhile, Secretary sports Anirudh Singh said that the sports department is ensuring to provide the best adventure sports to sports enthusiast. Accordingly, the department is also working on it with the coming up of various sports disciplines and infrastructure. He also assured to take forward the sports activities in the state.
