ITANAGAR, Nov 7: The People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) has sought more clarity from the state government over the demand for inclusion of Arunachal Pradesh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and the issues of Article 371-A type constitutional status demand for the state and doing away with the decades-old Arunachal Pradesh Statehood Act, 1987.
In its press release issued today, the state’s lone regional political party has drawn attention of the state government regarding the air of confusion that has been created due to the demand of the Sixth Schedule status, a resolution for which was also passed in the last assembly session and the series of announcements made by the Chief Minister recently which have clearly conveyed the message of arrival of the Panchayat elections any time from now. Terming the entire affair “a big confusing situation”, the PPA has pointed out the self-contradictory and ambiguous stand taken by the state government. The release underlined that although the constitutional provisions of the Sixth Schedule make Panchayat elections non-existent, the state government is making preparations for conducting the same. “The demand for the Sixth Schedule also implies that the people have rejected outright the relevance of democratic decentralization at the grassroots level in the state,” the release read. The party has also alleged that the government has been procrastinating on the pressing issues like the need for an Article 371-A type constitutional status for the state and doing away with the defective Statehood Act.
To put an immediate end to the prevailing confusion, the party has appealed to the government to take a one-pointed stand on the Sixth Schedule issue and announce clear-cut policies regarding the other ones. PPA PR
