TEZU, Dec 17: A heartbreaking tragedy struck Peon Colony in Tezu in the early hours of Wednesday when a devastating fire engulfed a cluster of residential houses, claiming the lives of two young siblings and leaving several families homeless.
The two victims were a 15-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother. The children were alone at home when the fire broke out, as their parents had travelled to Koloriang to cast their votes in the ongoing panchayat elections. Their father, Chera Neel, works as a night chowkidar at CALSOM School.
Fire & Emergency Services OC Tezu H. Lona informed that three fire tenders rushed to the spot around 4 a.m. after receiving an emergency call. However, by the time firefighters reached the area, the blaze had already reduced three residential houses to ashes, belonging to Habung Umi, Gyati Naka, and Chera Neel. With coordinated efforts from the police and fire personnel, the raging fire was eventually brought under control.
The reason behind the incident is yet to be accertained, informed Lona.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the locality, with residents mourning the tragic loss of young lives. Local MLA Mohesh Chai visited the affected families, extended relief materials, and expressed deep condolences. He also instructed the District Disaster Management Officer to fast-track compensation and necessary assistance for the bereaved and affected families.
