PASIGHAT, Jun 18: The early monsoon flood in Siang river has almost reached the danger level mark resulting in massive soil erosion along the left bank village areas of Namsing and Padan under the Namsing Circle of Mebo Sub-Division.
As per sources, more than 400 metres of land between Namsing and Padan villages had been washed away already. “Paddy, ginger, maize fields etc have been damaged by the flood, affecting the farmers severely. This is despite the official sanction of huge funds for flood control works to save the agricultural fields and villages of Namsing, Mer, Gadum, Padan (Kongkul), Seram, Borguli, Kiyit, Motum, Raling and Sigar villages,” retired police Inspector US Perme rued.
“I don’t mean to criticize our local leader for failing to construct a proper flood control measure in Siang river, but I belief that if a smaller bund like the one in Sigar was constructed to divert the part of Siang that flows from north of Jopong, the thickly forested land under the Borguli Range of D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary, the river wouldn’t have been so destructive,” he added.
Echoing the same feelings, Gaon Burah of Namsing village Bohonto Perme appealed to the state government to help the villagers before the current monsoon takes its full form.
Meanwhile, after the massive flooding, the WRD department being the monitoring agency is constantly assessing the water level since a further increase might damage the newly constructed tie-bund flood control structure stretching 1.5 km. Assistant Engineer Geyon Tayeng however assured that as of now there is nothing to panic as the bund is strong enough to bear the water pressure.
“The slight capsizing of the tie-bund project at Sigar is due to seepage of river water from the boulder bund which will be supported with more filling of boulders around the point of occurrence once the weather becomes fair,” AE explained in response to queries raised on social media.
