ROING, Feb 13: Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein today while flagging off a vehicle carrying six drug abuse victims selected for rehabilitation at Guwahati has appealed the youths of the state to shun drugs.
Terming youths as future of the country, Mein reminded them to participate in nation building activities and not fall prey to the drug menace. He urged them to launch a crusade against drugs by initiating mass awareness campaigns all across the districts so that the message reaches every nook and corner of the state. He also exhorted the youths to associate actively in mainstream activities instead of leading passive lives and commended the initiative of Roing Police for educating the youths regarding the ill effects of drugs.
Lauding the efforts of SP Lower Dibang Valley district S.K. Sain, DCM said it is the police which first encounters the drug abuse victims and the said rehabilitation effort is an example that a dedicated police unit can perform duties well beyond its chartered path. The said drug abuse victims have been selected as a part of the anti-drug efforts of Roing Police.
SP briefed the DCM about the Anti-Drug Squad (Crime Unit), which is an unique concept created with dedicated police unit and entrusted with containment of drug-abuse in the district by arresting drug peddlers and suppliers. He informed that to tackle drug-abuse on war-footing, Roing Police had formed the squad and till date has been extremely successful in their efforts with more than 20 cases under relevant narcotics law registered, 67 peddlers arrested and huge quantity of narcotics seized. SP further divulged that to ensure complete eradication of the menace, they have drafted a road-map which includes counselling and rehabilitation of drug-abuse victims, as a part of which a dedicated Counselling Centre at Roing Police Station had been formed which was inaugurated by Home Minister Bamang Felix along with formation of a ADS-Rehabilitation Unit in Roing. After creation of the unit which is a registry of active users in the district, with the help of medical officials, health camps were organised followed by multiple counselling sessions, fitness camps etc for the selected victims.
While exuding happiness, SP said the long pursued rehabilitation programme has finally bore fruit with the sending off these six boys for rehabilitation. “We are honoured to have the Deputy Chief Minister flagging off the said drug abuse victims to the Rehabilitation Centre,” he said adding that it not only fills their heart with hope for a drug free district but also encourages them to work harder to achieve the goal.
The said venture is a zero budget programme with the entire rehabilitation drive being done in collaboration with corporates and funded through their CSR schemes. DCM Media Cell
