SHERGAON, Mar 13: The two-day ‘Rhododendron Festival',  an event to create awareness on preservation of the valuable Rhododendron wildflower began today at Shergaon. The festival is being organized by the joint initiatives of locals, women self help group and youths under the banner of Shergaon Rhododendron Festival committee from March 13 to 14.
The blooming of rhododendrons heralds the onset of spring in the Himalayas.
Attending the inaugural day as Chief Guest, Guru Tulku Rinpoche of Lower Gompa, Bomdila appreciated the locals of Shergaon for organizing such event to show their love and concern towards nature.  “Like the beautiful flower Rhododendron, we should preserve our culture and tradition as well,” he stated.
Elaborating about the festival, Chairman SRFC, Ledo Thungon informed that the motive behind the festival is to promote and create awareness on the importance of Rhododendron flower.There are more than 30 species of Rhododendron and   eight are found only in West Kameng , said 
Thungon. Since 2018, we are organizing the festival but due to the pandemic, there was a gap last year, he added.
Besides, preserving and awareness on Rhododendrons, cultural events from different tribes residing in West Kameng district, outdoor activities like cycling, rock climbing , Bird watching and other events are being organized in the two day festival. Effort is being made to promote tourism in Shergaon through this festival.
