ITANAGAR, Nov 1: In a bid to promote local cuisines in local markets, Department of Tourism, organized a vegetarian cooking competition here at the State Food Craft Institute (SFCI) today.
The theme of the competition was ‘Backyard Biodiversity-Promoting Local Vegetable and Herbs’. In her keynote address, Tourism Assistant Director Bengia Manna Sonam exhorted the participants to preserve biodiversity and use local herbs for commercial purposes. She further said that participating in such event is more important than getting prizes and assured to give more training to the unemployed youths to make them well-equipped to run own businesses. APTOA President John Panye said that women can play a vital role in promoting tourism in the state by running homestays and restaurants. TIO Duyir Yedi opined that selling local and organic-centric cuisines in the market will fill the gap of unemployment. SFCI Consultant S Kar informed that the motive behind the competition was to promote local vegetables and herbs through local talents.
Among the total 13 participants, Tilek Perme, Teri Yajo and Yade Dujom got the first, second and third prizes respectively while consolation prizes were given to Nabam Neme Ngurang and Techi Nime.
