Rono Hills, Sep 23: A two-day international seminar titled ‘Ethnicity, Livelihood and Culture Change Among the Himalayan People: Anthropology and Beyond’ was inaugurated today here at the Arunachal Institute of Tribal Studies (AITS) Conference Hall of RGU. Director, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal Professor Sarit Kumar Chaudhuri introduced the seminar, its themes and objectives. Department of Anthropology NEHU, Shillong and former Vice Chancellor Sikkim University Professor TB. Subha delivered the key note speech and mentioned the diverse resources of the Himalayas and their degradation because of over-exploration.
Director, Social Justice and Empowerment and Tribal Affairs and Guest of Honour Yumlam Kaha mentioned the significance of diverse flora and fauna of the Himalayas which has to be tapped for utility purposes. Registrar in-charge of RGU Professor Tamo Riba mentioned the tough life of the hilly people and said it’s because of the Himalayas, India has enough rainfall to cater to its diverse needs. Head of Department, Anthropology and Coordinator of the seminar, Professor H. Vokendro Singh also spoke on the occasion. Various technical concurrent sessions were delivered by a host of researchers.
