ITANAGAR, Jul 1: A 2-day online national seminar on ‘Recent Trends in Anthropological Research’ organized jointly by Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar and Mrinalini Datta Mahavidyapith, Kolkata commenced today.
Around 342 participants comprising eminent anthropologists, faculty members, research scholars and students from different parts of the country and abroad are participating in the seminar which will be spread over 6 technical sessions along with presentation of 52 research papers. Eminent anthropologist of the Northeast and Head, Department of Anthropology, Rajiv Gandhi University Professor Sarit Kumar Chaudhuri in his keynote address highlighted the need for expanding the scope of anthropological research like inclusion of Museum Anthropology in university syllabi and the need of government support and collaboration between educational institutions and funding agencies. Principal, Mrinalini Datta Mahavidyapith (MDM) and the seminar’s adviser Dr. Apurba Banyopadhyay said that the MoU inked between the two colleges will enhance the outlook of the respective faculties and students. IQAC Coordinator, MDM and Joint Coordinator of the seminar Dr. Mitali Gangopadhyay mentioned that presentation of research publications is going to be a major output of the seminar.
Terming Arunachal Pradesh which is the home of more than 110 ethnic groups of people as a true paradise for anthropologists, DNGC Principal Dr. M. Q. Khan highlighted the importance of the subject for the state. Some of the pertinent anthropological issues to be address are preservation of cultural heritage, identity protection through language, religion, dress and other aspects of indigenous culture, particularly of dying cultures and languages, Dr. Khan said, adding that Arunachal is currently in a stage of transition with emerging factors like corruption, alcoholism, rapid urbanization-led haphazard developmental becoming important.
Eminent anthropologists namely Professor Sarthak Sengupta from Dibrugarh University, Dr. Sucheta Sen Chaudhuri from Central University of Jharkhand, Professor M. Romesh Singh from School of Social Sciences, University of Hyderabad, Professor M. Manibabu Singh from Manipur University, Professor Dr. Anjali Kurane from Savitribai Phule Pune University, Professor Emeritus (UGC) from University of Allahabad Vijay Shankar Sahay and Professor Mitashree Mitra from Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University Raipur participated on the opening day of the seminar.
