PASIGHAT, Sep 9: To make an assessment of the root cause of damage caused to the standing crops in Ruksin, Sille, Oyan, Rani and 5-Mile areas in East Siang district, Secretary (Agri-Horti) Bidol Tayeng accompanied by Director of Agriculture A. Lego, Director of Horticulture J. Rime and other officials on Tuesday conducted field visits to the affected areas.
ADC (Hq) Tatdo Borang, DAO, DHO, Scientists of CAU and KVK accompanied the visiting team. The CHF/CAU and KVK scientists informed the team that yellowing of standing crops was due to the combined attack of white backed, brown plant and green leaf hoppers which acted as vectors of the Tungro virus and could be controlled by spraying imidacloprid (systemic insecticide) along with micronutrients in the early stages of attack. The team was further informed that attacks of insect pests such as rice case worm, green leaf, white back and brown plant hopper had occurred due to heavy rainfall and constant standing of water in farming fields during the current kharif season. Besides nitrogen, potassium and micronutrient deficiency in rice were observed by them, the experts/scientists told the team which also visited the fields of areca-nut and palm oil farmers, APMC complex and the 2 Mile meat and fish market here in the township.
Later on the day, Tayeng and Deputy Commissioner Dr. Kinny Singh reviewed the statuses of various agri and horti schemes being implemented in East Siang at the Siang Hall. DAO, DHO, ADOs and HDOs of the district gave updates through PowerPoint Presentation and informed that 8-10 hectares of land will be required to set up an oil palm factory. The Agri & Horti Secretary advised the officers to encourage farmers to reduce the quantum of chemical fertilizers and replace them by bio-fertilizers to retain soil health.
